COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course is online and consists of recorded lectures in English and quizzes linked to the lectures. It is for animal health professionals who want to increase their competence in exotics species such as small mammals, birds and reptiles. The content and recorded lectures corresponds to 2 full course days therefore we recommend that you schedule time equal for a two-day course or two workdays. You will have access to the lectures for a total of 14 days from the first time you log into the course portal, please note that the material is available from March 9th. In the course you will learn more about anatomy, physiology, husbandry, common diseases and critical care of these animal species, but also more about techniques you can use in clinical work. The course also includes anesthesia and basic surgery for small mammals and reptiles. Finally, you will also learn about basic dental care for small mammals.
INTENDED AUDIENCE
Veterinarians, veterinary technician and veterinary nurses with a special interest in exotic animals.
CONTENT
Content small mammals:
- Husbandry, anatomy and physiology
- Breeding
- Common clinical techniques and critical care
- I.v. acess and medication techniques
- Bloodsampling and x-ray
- Anesthesia incl. protocols, drugs and dosage
- Basic surgical principles
- Basic odontology
- Common diseases
Content reptiles and birds:
- Care, anatomy and physiology of reptiles
- Common diseases of reptiles
- Breeding in birds
- Hibernation in reptiles
- Bloodsampling, ultrasound, endoscopy and x-ray of birds and reptiles
- Anesthesia,analgesia incl drugs and dosage, critical care and surgery of reptiles
- Care, anatomy and physiology of birds
- Common diseases and critical care of birds
After completing the course, the participant is expected to:
After completing the course, the participant is expected to have good knowledge of the care, anatomy and physiology of small mammals, reptiles and birds.
Be comfortable treating the species of small mammals, reptiles and birds in need of critical care
For the animal species small mammals and reptiles have basic knowledge of anesthesia and surgery
Be familiar with basic small mammal odontology
Have good knowledge of common diseases in all species of small mammals, reptiles and birds.

LECTURER
Sören Decraene, Veterinarian
Sören has run his own clinic for 10 years in Belgium, where a large part of the patients were exotic animals (everything from reptiles to elephants). He moved to Sweden in October 2021 and started at a smaller clinic where he focused on exotic animals but also surgery and emergency care. Today Sören is working as veterinarian at Kolmården Zoo.
